Swimming background:
I grew up running, enjoyed pushing my limits running a sub 30 min 10km, got injured and turned to swimming to keep sane. I swim for fun, without the stress and hardcore training routines I followed with my running. But, still want to test my limits. I have swim across Lake Malawi, completed 7 Robben Island Swims, swum from Little Diomede Island in Russia to Big Diomede Island in the USA, around Rangitoto Island and completed an Ice Mile to name a few.
Why did you start cold swimming?
I wanted to prove to myself, and my kids, that you can do anything you put your mind to. Anything.
What are your cold swimming achievements?
- 1km Ice Swim in 1.8 degrees Celsius in Fraserburg, South Africa.
- 1km swim in 4.8 degrees Celsius in Queenstown while on the Cold Tour 2020.
- Then another 1km and then the big Mile in 4.8 degrees at Lake Lyndon, Christchurch 2021.

How do you train for cold swimming?
My philosophy is different – I do not believe in ice baths or cold showers as swimming in cold water is different to sitting in it. I just think ice baths are a form of punishment for me, and not enjoyable in any form. Instead, an ice mile requires a basic swim fitness, and loads of mental preparation and toughness.
How do you like to recover after a cold swim?
Get dry ASAP, multiple layers including a hot water bottle and beanie. I feel nauseous standing up, and recover best lying down, left alone to shiver and gather myself over 30-45 minutes.

Any suggestions or recommendations for people wanting to give cold swimming a try?
Give it a go, have a reason for doing it, and remember that this is one of those things that will be harder than you think it is. Surround yourself with awesome people.
